Biotin itself is a free small molecule. In biological experiments, it often needs to be covalently labeled on proteins or biomaterials to make use of the strong specificity and affinity of BAS system to amplify signals, detect quantitatively and purify samples. This process of labeling biotin is called biotinylation.
